Hi @Tim1861,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with the "not intended for use in this printer" error with the HP 63 ink cartridge in your HP OfficeJet 4650 printer could be due to several reasons.
Here's a troubleshooting guide to help resolve this issue:
1. Check Cartridge Compatibility
Ensure that you are using genuine HP 63 or HP 63XL ink cartridges. Check the cartridge and printer documentation to confirm compatibility.
2. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall outlet.
- Wait for 60 seconds: Allow the printer to completely power down.
- Reconnect the power cord: Plug the power cord back into the printer and the wall outlet.
- Turn on the printer: Press the power button to turn the printer back on.
3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Turn off the printer and open the ink cartridge access door.
- Remove the ink cartridges: Gently press down on the ink cartridge to release it, then pull it out.
- Inspect the cartridges: Check for any protective tape that might still be on the contacts and remove it if present.
- Clean the contacts:
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
- Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.
- Avoid touching the nozzles.
- Allow the contacts to dry: Let the contacts air dry for a few minutes.
- Reinstall the ink cartridges: Slide the ink cartridges back into their slots and close the access door.
4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
Outdated firmware can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Check if there's an available firmware update for your printer model on the HP website.
- Visit the HP Support website: Go to the HP support page for your printer model.
- Download the latest firmware: Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.
5. Try a Different Cartridge
If possible, try using a different HP 63 ink cartridge to see if the problem persists. This can help determine if the issue is with the specific cartridge or the printer.

I hope this helps.
