What is the difference between HP 305XL Ink Cartridge codes 3YM63A and 3YM63AE? 

Are they interchangeable?

My Envy 6020e printer is saying that my Tri-colour cartridge is incompatible, when it's not.  It's a standard HP 305XL 3YM63A cartridge.

The difference between HP 305XL Ink Cartridge codes 3YM63A and 3YM63AE is mainly in the region or packaging:

  1. 3YM63A – This is the standard HP 305XL Tri-Color ink cartridge.
  2. 3YM63AE – This is the same cartridge but sold in different regions or packaging (e.g., bulk or single-use packs).

Are They Interchangeable?

Yes, in most cases, they are interchangeable as long as they are meant for the same region. However, if your printer was originally set up in a different country, it may reject certain region-locked cartridges.

Fixing the Incompatible Cartridge Issue on Your Envy 6020e

Try these steps:

Reset the Printer

  • Remove the ink cartridge.
  • Power off the printer and unplug it for 5 minutes.
  • Plug it back in, turn it on, and reinstall the cartridge.

Check for Software or Firmware Updates

  • Open HP Smart or HP Support Assistant.
  • Look for firmware updates and install them.

Ensure You Are Using the Correct Region Cartridge

  • If you moved countries, your printer might be region locked.
  • Contact HP Support to request a region reset.

Reinstall the Cartridge Properly

  • Remove the cartridge and wipe the gold contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert it firmly and correctly.

If the Issue Persists

  • If you recently changed Wi-Fi settings or HP+ account settings, the printer may have deactivated your cartridge.
  • Check if your subscription to HP Instant Ink is causing the error (if applicable).
  • Try a different cartridge if possible, in case the one you have is faulty.
