I've bought two brand new HP 678 cartridges and tried everything to install them but keep getting this error. I've tried disabling cartridge protection., semi-full reset....etc. Nothing works.
When i put my old cartridge it works - but that is low on ink now.
I've read that this is a faulty firmware update and the only fix is a full factory reset. Please can you private message me the full reset instructions to fix the issue. My Model number is : HP inkjet 3540.
Thank you.,

Hi @Vidstrog,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd like to help!
Please try it on a Windows computer
- Click on the “start” button on your computer, and then click “Devices and Printers”
- Find your HP printer and double-click it to open the “Settings” page.
- Click the text for “Estimated Ink Levels” under the heading of “Shopping Resources”. This will open the HP Toolbox window.
- Click the tab for “Cartridge Protection”
- Click the radio button next to “Disable HP Cartridge Protection”.
- Click the “Save Setting” button to save your new setting. Then, close the window.
- You might need to remove and re-install the cartridge for it to be recognized properly.
If that does not work then,
This situation will need some additional support from our internal teams in HP. For that to happen, we will give you additional instructions/information via Private Message.
Please check your inbox on the forums page for the private message.
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution button, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
