Does anyone know how to reset the ink system as suggested Gaya1239?

I'm having a challenge with my 8600 printer with a new cartridge...just one of the four.  I replaced three of the four and they all work fine (I think), but the fourth one (happened to be cyan) is causing a "Printer Failure" error message.  I've powered the poor printer on and off and pulled the cord more times in the last couple days than I have in the 10 years since I've owned the printer -- all to no avail. I can input the old cyan cartridge back in, but it's depleted and the printer won't print as long as it's depleted.  I've removed and reinstalled the printhead assembly a couple times, too (not sure why, but I was trying anything I could think of and I thought it might help).  I'm grasping at straws for solutions, I know, but Gaya239's comment about ink reset intrigued me as a possible solution I hadn't tried.

Hi @Retired_Rob,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing an issue with your Printer that has a printer failure error.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to further troubleshoot.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day

It didn't help because it didn't solve my problem. My printer is still acting up. It has now progressed to the point where it says my new HP cartridges are used. They are new and never had a single page printed with them. The only printer in which they've ever been installed is mine.

If my problem is a printhead problem, the system would tell me so, would it not? Going through the network and using "Admin", the report says my printhead is "Good", so I assume that is not my problem, but rather something else.

Is there a way to reset the printer back to total factory settings (wipe out it's memory and start from scratch)?  I fear it's got burned into its memory there was a problem, and all these steps might have solved it, but it keeps on giving me old data/old status.
