Hi @Slyfu,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how stressful and messy an ink issue feels, especially with a Smart Tank printer, where you can see that rich, bright red ink sitting right there in the tank… yet the printer refuses to print it. Let’s get your HP Smart Tank 7001 printing red again with deep, including steps that fix the most common hidden causes

You'll feel the printer warm up, the printhead glide softly from left to right, and finally (hopefully!) the red/magenta start flowing again.

STEP 1: Check the Ink Supply Line (MOST IMPORTANT)

This fixes 80% of Smart Tank red ink failures.

  1. Open the printer’s top cover.
  2. Look at the magenta ink line (pink/red line leading from the tank to the printhead carriage).
  3. Look for:
    • White gaps
    • Large air bubbles
    • Broken/empty segments

If you see bubbles, the ink isn’t flowing, but we can prime it manually.

STEP 2: PRIME the Magenta Ink (Hidden Fix HP Recommends)

This is not the same as a cleaning cycle.

Do this:

  1. Turn OFF the printer.
  2. Open the cartridge/printhead access area.
  3. Locate the magenta printhead (usually marked with M).
  4. Gently press the printhead down until you feel a soft click; this forces the valve to open fully.
  5. Close the lid and turn the printer back ON.
  6. Now run two cleaning cycles:
    • Setup → Maintenance → Printhead Cleaning

You should hear a deeper, longer cleaning sound; this means ink is being pulled through.

STEP 3: Run an “Advanced” Cleaning Cycle

This is stronger than normal cleaning.

On the printer screen:
Setup → Tools → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead → Level 2 (Deep Clean)

After this, print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page.

If red is still missing, continue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
