Red ink doesn't print. No error message. Put in a new cartridge. No red. Any ideas? I am instant ink program. I tried updating my firmware but it says the update doesn't apply.

Hi @JG8071,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 isn't printing red ink even after replacing the cartridge, here are a few steps you can try.
Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure the new cartridge is correctly installed. Remove it and reinsert it to make sure it's seated properly.
Clean Printhead: Sometimes, the issue might be with a clogged printhead. You can clean the printhead using the printer’s built-in cleaning feature:
- Go to the printer’s control panel.
- Navigate to Setup or Tools.
- Select Clean Printhead.
Printhead Alignment: Perform a printhead alignment, which might help resolve the issue:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup or Tools.
- Select Align Printhead or a similar option.
Check Ink Levels: Ensure the red ink cartridge has sufficient ink. Sometimes, new cartridges might not be fully filled or could be defective.
Run Printer Diagnostic: Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool, available for download from the HP website, to diagnose and fix common printer issues.
Check for Firmware Updates: Although you've tried updating the firmware, it’s worth checking if there are any updates specific to your model that might fix the issue. Visit the HP support website for the latest firmware.
Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the printer from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in. This can sometimes resolve software glitches.
Check for Paper or Ink Blockages: Inspect the printer for any obstructions or blockages that could be affecting the print quality.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
