HP OfficeJet Pro 6978

I  have  had  an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 for   about 3 years.    After a year I discontinued  HP Instant Ink and started to use remanufactured cartridges purchased through  an online retailer.  Never have had a problem unit recently  About a month ago I installed a 4 pack of remanufactured HP 902 cartridgges.  Error message that the black cartridge was damaged.    The retailer replaced that cartridge.  Same issue with the replacement cart5ridge  ( physical inspection  indicates it is in  excellent condition.   I followed the  cartridge supplier's instruction on  how to correct the error  (  power off, remove cartridges, disconnect for 10 + minute, reverse steps;  no change)   About a month ago I updated the  Printer software.    Has HP  changed the software to  block a user form using remanufactured cartridges.

@MTat02115, Welcome to HP Support Community!

The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it is not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!

I am pretty sure this online retailer is  refilling HP cartridges.  Included with the replacement cartridge were specific to instructions on how to disable the HP cartridge protection.  Unfortunately the instructions were for a different printer model and there were no  options on the HP6978 tools or help software.

It is possible that the remanufactured cartridges that  had previously worked were purchased from a different online  retailer...and it is pisdible that the printer is broken.  (I will ve installing genuine HP 902 cartridge later abd will be able to ascertain if that us the probkem

I am still suspicious that when HP updated the software for the HP 6978  it slipped in an algorithm to prevent using third party cartridges.   I would be grateful to get an absolute denial of this from HP

Like I previously mentioned third-party ink does work on HP printers. If at once and then it stopped working there might be multiple reasons. It could either be the ink used or the printer ink system.

Please reach out to the HP Support in your region to further isolate and resolve the issue.

Hope this helps!

Are you able to  tell me  definitely  that HP has not changed the software for  the HP OfficejetPro 6978 to block the use of third party  cartridges?

I cannot surely tell you about the firmware change because there is not any proof for the same. If HP has sent you any notification on the same then yes, if not it just could be faulty ink or ink system.

Thanks for understanding!

Side Bar:

Cartridge Protection is not related to whether a printer can use re-manufactured ink or refilled cartridges.

Cartridge Protection is used to protect against an installed ink cartridge being removed from the printer (where Cartridge Protection is enabled) and then installed and used in another printer.  Cartridge Protection might be enabled, for example, in an office, work place, or school environment to guard against the casual ink cartridge thief.
