I have 5 HP ENVY Inspote 7955e printers and multiple (11 total) other printers in my account. The HP Smart app is not very smart. You can not rename the printer or add a description to it to help designate which printer it is and its location. He can rename devices in the print queues, email-to-print, and the support page but not here. I saw a post from 2020 that said you can look it up by serial number, which is difficult to find on the printer web page and problematic and inefficient at best. Is there a way to accomplish this to warrant the name "HP Smart"?

Hi @tmassing,
Thank you for your response,
It sounds like renaming printers in the HP Smart app is causing you quite a bit of frustration. Unfortunately, as of now, the HP Smart app does not offer the feature to rename printers directly within the app, which can indeed make managing multiple devices cumbersome.
Here are a few workarounds you might consider.
- Use Printer Management Software: For more advanced printer management, you might want to use HP’s other software solutions like HP Web Jetadmin. This software is designed for more extensive printer management and might offer the functionality you need.
- Assign Printer Names via IP Address: Some users find it helpful to rename printers through their network settings by assigning unique names or descriptions to each printer’s IP address. You can usually do this through the printer’s embedded web server (EWS), but you’d have to access it by entering the printer’s IP address into a web browser.
- Create Descriptive Printer Profiles: If renaming is not an option, consider creating descriptive profiles or groups in your print queue settings, if your operating system allows. For example, you might set up different print queues for each printer and name these queues according to their location or function.
These methods might not be as straightforward as renaming directly in the app, but they can help manage and identify your printers more effectively.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks @Alden4.
I already do most of these to manage printers. The HP Smart app is challenging because of Instant Ink subscriptions, etc. However, I do appreciate your thoughtful reply.
From reading many of the older posts, this feature request has been brought up multiple times over the past year or so. I would appreciate you adding one more voice to the feature request since support and other apps already have the capability.
It would be great if they could just add another field that the user can put in their description. That way it would not change the core information required by the HP Smart functions.
This one I will try.

Thank you again for your thoughtful reply.
