Hi @Lenny5695,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The error message "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 can appear even when using genuine HP cartridges, and it's typically triggered by the printer detecting something unusual in the ink system.

HP-Recommended Fixes

  1. Confirm Cartridge Authenticity
    • Ensure you're using genuine HP cartridges (e.g., HP 952 series for the 7740).
    • Check for the HP security label on the cartridge box.
    • Use the HP Cartridge Authentication Tool to verify.

  2. Clean Cartridge Contacts
    • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
    • Remove the affected cartridge(s).
    • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
    • Let dry, then reinstall.

  3. Reset the Printer
    • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
    • Wait 60 seconds.
    • Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

  4. Update Firmware
  5. Avoid Aftermarket Modifications
    • If the printer was previously used with a Continuous Ink System (CIS) or refilled cartridges, it may have residual settings or damage.
    • HP printers are designed to detect and reject such systems to protect the printhead and maintain quality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
