I replaced my HP printer cartridges with the exact same ones ( but new) 902xl and now I'm getting an error message that the cartridges are an older generation that do not work in my printer.

Hi @KNazzy, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Older Generation" cartridge error occurs when the printer detects that the cartridges are from a different manufacturing batch that is not compatible with the firmware version of your printer. HP periodically updates firmware, which can block certain older cartridges from working.

Steps to Fix the Issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait 2-3 minutes.

Plug it back in and turn it on.

Try reinstalling the cartridges.

2. Check for Firmware Updates

If your printer has an outdated firmware version, it may not recognize newer cartridge generations.

Check for updates via the printer’s control panel or HP’s website.

If you recently updated the firmware and the issue started, downgrade the firmware (see Step 6).

3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Remove the cartridges and gently wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth.

Reinsert the cartridges firmly.

4. Try a Hard Reset

Remove the cartridges.

Turn off the printer, unplug it for 5-10 minutes.

Plug it back in, turn it on, and reinstall the cartridges.

5. Check Cartridge Authenticity

Ensure your cartridges are genuine HP and not refilled or third-party ones.

6. Downgrade Firmware (if applicable)

If the error appeared after a firmware update, you might need to downgrade to a previous version that supported your cartridges.

Download the older firmware version from HP’s website (if available).

Disable automatic updates in the printer settings to prevent reinstallation of the newer firmware.

7. Try Another Set of Cartridges

If the issue persists, try another new set of cartridges from a different retailer. Some batches may have different chip versions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
