This is stupid. I shouldn't have to be within warranty for ink cartridges. I've got an old HP Deskjet 6988 and I can't add it to my products because it's out-of-warranty, and the server won't let me add it to this website. Anyway, they've replaced the #96 with #98, and my printer can't pick up #98. That is not a warranty issue, and who told them they could shorten the length of the replacement and have it work. Goes to show they didn't QA #98 on all the printers that use #96, or this wouldn't happen. How am I going to find a cartridge now?
HP needs to get it together, because this shouldn't be a warranty issue. It was their choice to think they could replace a larger cartridge with a shorter one. SMH

There are none, Echo. I have to toss a working printer because they discontinued the cartridge, none can be found, and this is just a ploy to sell more printers. I've been in this industry long enough to see trends (try since 1978), and this is one of them when it comes to technology.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,
To get the answer to this question, you cannot use a different number of ink with printers. It will either damage the printer or the printer will not accept the ink at all. It is important to use ink that is compatible with your printer.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Ummmm, HP is the one who replaced #96 with #98. I didn't pull that cartridge number out of thin air. So, your response is unhelpful, and #96 is being discontinued? That means I have to junk my printer, because I can't find a cartridge for it. There are other posts about this phenomenon, and HP is very slick to do this sort of thing. HP should've never discontinued #96 or said #98 is being shipped in place of #96, Echo_Lake. I would've never known that until I came here looking for what's going on!
You also ignored everything else I said about having to have a printer within warranty to even complain about a cartridge. I really despise Forums, because of having to weed through responses that address nothing and not having access to HP tech-support employees. Dumb business decision, HP ... or is it always about profits that edge people out of their devices. Nothing is wrong with my printer; something is wrong with HP practices. This stinks.

Thank you for posting back.
After reading your post I did go through the ink cartridge details and found out 98 ink is not compatible with this printer.
However, you can reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for the replacement ink.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Whatever you did is not the interface that told me #98 replaced #96 for THIS printer. There is no way I can presuppose that HP got it wrong and displayed misinformation to me. All I know is HP said what I just did. AND? They discontinued #96, which does what for me and others who need that cartridge for our printers to continue operating? SMH 🙄
