Hello,
My GF purchased a HP Smart Tank 5101. After installing and completing the set-up, I wanted to check out then scanner. Placed a document for scanning, scanned and clicked the print button. A pop-up from HP Smart came up and clicked print.
Then it took over 5 minutes to print the document. I used the HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.7.4. No issues were found. I did a test print, printer OK with adequate speed.
So, why is printing a scanned document so very slow?

Hi @dehinson64,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the slow printing of a scanned document on your HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer could be due to several factors. Here are a few possible reasons and solutions to consider:
1. High-Resolution Scanning:
- Cause: Scanning a document at a high resolution (e.g., 600 DPI or higher) creates larger file sizes, which can slow down the printing process as the printer has to process more data.
- Solution: Try scanning the document at a lower resolution (e.g., 300 DPI) for standard text documents. This reduces the file size and should speed up printing.
2. Connection Type:
- Cause: If the printer is connected wirelessly, network issues or interference can slow down data transfer between your computer and the printer, affecting print speed.
- Solution: Ensure the printer is close to the Wi-Fi router and has a strong signal. Alternatively, use a USB cable to connect the printer directly to your computer for a faster, more stable connection.
3. Printer Settings:
- Cause: Certain print settings, like high-quality mode or double-sided printing, can slow down printing.
- Solution: Check the print settings in the HP Smart app or the printer properties on your computer. Ensure you are not printing in the highest quality mode unless necessary.
4. Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Cause: Outdated printer firmware might cause performance issues, including slow printing.
- Solution: Check for firmware updates using the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP website. Keeping the firmware up to date can resolve bugs and improve performance.
5. HP Smart App Configuration:
- Cause: The HP Smart app settings might be set to optimize for quality over speed.
- Solution: Open the HP Smart app, go to settings, and look for print quality options. Set it to 'Draft' or 'Normal' for faster printing instead of 'Best' or 'High Quality.'
6. PC Performance:
- Cause: If your computer is slow or overloaded with other tasks, it can delay the processing time for print jobs.
- Solution: Close unnecessary applications and ensure your computer is not running resource-intensive tasks while printing.
7. Document File Size:
- Cause: Some scanned documents may have large file sizes, especially if they contain images or graphics.
- Solution: Optimize the scanned document by reducing its file size using PDF compression tools or software.
8. HP Print and Scan Doctor Configuration:- HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Cause: Although the HP Print and Scan Doctor reported no issues, the default configuration might not be optimized for speed.
- Solution: Re-run the HP Print and Scan Doctor and check if there are any settings for print speed optimization.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
