HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One

When I print an envelope from MS Word, the print quality is abysmal... almost impossible to read.  I've tried different envelopes, I've tried printing to a plain sheet of paper and I even tried printing using the envelope sized document in Word instead of the Mail function... all with the same results.

The letter I'm writing prints perfectly, can't figure out the problem but, I ended up hand printing the envelop address.

I was using a Times New Roman font, and also tried other fonts with the same bad results.

Hi @Mandremo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for explaining the issue so clearly. I can imagine how disappointing it must be to have your envelope prints come out unreadable, especially when your letter prints perfectly. You’ve already tried smart workarounds, and that shows your dedication. Let’s get this sorted.

Key Steps to Improve Envelope Print Quality on HP Smart Tank 7602

1. Use the Correct Envelope Settings in Word

HP recommends configuring Microsoft Word properly for envelope printing:

  • Go to Mailings > Envelopes > Options.
  • Choose the correct envelope size (e.g., DL, C5, etc.).
  • Set the feed method to match how you load the envelope in the printer.
  • Make sure the print orientation matches the tray feed direction.

2. Load Envelopes Properly

  • Use clean, wrinkle-free envelopes.
  • Load them in the input tray with the print side facing down (for front-load trays).
  • Adjust the paper guides snugly but not too tight.

3. Adjust Print Settings for Quality

  • In Word, go to File > Print > Printer Properties.
  • Under Media & Quality, select:
    • Paper Type: Choose “Envelope” or “Plain Paper” if envelope isn’t listed.
    • Print Quality: Set to Best.
  • Avoid using draft mode or low-resolution fonts.

4. Run Print Quality Diagnostics

If the issue persists even with correct settings:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to:
    • Menu > Tools > Troubleshooting > Print Quality
    • Run Clean Printhead and Align Printhead

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply and it is much appreciated.  Unfortunately, I've tried all the solutions you recommend but the problem remains.  I am attaching a jpg scan of the envelope print results I received.  I've used various paper and print settings all to no avail.  This print was done on a plain sheet of 8.5x11 paper.  I realize this is causing the printer to print diagonally as opposed to it's standard horizontal format but, this quality is unusable.
