I have seen several posts regarding a need to by=ass the error message asking me to use the “original setup cartridges” which I no longer have. I have tried the solutions, but they have not worked. I am installing a new printhead on my HP 7740. I no longer have the setup cartridges.

@bealss, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If the unit was initialized earlier and you're encountering this error after setup, please follow the steps outlined in the guide to resolve the issue.

Refer: HP Printers - A 'Use SETUP Cartridges' Error Displays | HP® Support.

If this is your first time setting up the unit, you can ignore the previous steps.

To bypass the cartridge setup, we’ll need to perform an OOBE reset. However, since these steps are specific to your printer model, I'll send you detailed instructions via private message to ensure we don't risk causing any issues with the printer.

Also, could you please share the serial number of your unit in a private message so I can assist you more effectively?

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Not really helpful. The printer is not under warranty. In fact HP replaced the printer twice under warranty. In the process of troubleshooting previous issues for the second printer, HP sent me a new printhead and then decided to replace the entire machine. So I have an HP OEM printhead but they did not send a set of setup cartridges with the new machine, and I used the ones that came with the unused printhead to initialize the new printer. They told me I didn’t need to return the printhead. So now the printhead in the replacement machine has died but I have no way of using the new printhead because I have no setup cartridges. I need a way to be able to use regular HP ink cartridges to initialize the new printhead, or I need a set of setup cartridges. As far as I know there is no other solution except trashing a printer which could still function with what would seem to be an easy fix if HP was willing to make it happen. I’m happy to pay for the setup cartridges.

Hello I am having the same issue. Can you help me? I bought a brand new HP Office JetPro7740 printer a few years back. Now I am trying to set it up and the blue inkjet bleed out. I cleaned it all up but now I don't have the original set up blue one cause it is defective. I out a new set in there and it is telling me to install set up injets but I can't because the blue one is defective. I did try it again and it leaked all over again. Is there a way to bypass this set up feature? It is out of warranty I tried calling HP already
