Will someone please, please respond???? This is my third time posting about this issue and I have gotten absolutely no advice. I thought there were HP experts monitoring this, no?

I think that buying this printer may have been the worst purchase I've ever made. I don't understand why it is absolutely impossible to get any support from HP. This has been a horrible experience all around.

My question is below.

***

My ink cartridges consistently dry out after printing just a handful of pages - like 10-20 max. This is true of black and white and of color cartridges. Here are things we've tried that aren't working.

- I make sure and shut my printer down when I'm not using it, but that isn't solving the problem.

- I've tried taking out the cartridges and soaking them when they get dry, as people have suggested online, but it doesn't have long-term benefits.

- I've tried taking the cartridges out between  uses and covering them in cellophane/saranwrap, but they still dried out.

- We print a test page once a week to ensure it's getting regular use.

What can I do to extend the life of my cartridges? This cost isn't sustainable.

Thanks, Lisa

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

OK - here we are !

I am sorry you are feeling ignored.

The lack of response is generally not meant as a personal affront.

" Well, being ignored feels personal... "

There are very few of us in the Community who answer questions regularly.

There are literally thousands of requests for help every month.

Remove all the people who are only here to bask, complain, and rant -- and who might not get a response.

Remove the people who do not include enough information - no product, no Operating System, no details -- and who might not get a response.

There are still many people who ask for help.

We do try.  Smiling.

We are a user community -- people like yourself who own and use HP products.

We offer what we know willingly, as volunteers, without pay, and -- in some cases -- without even a simple thank-you.

We are teachers, tech people, IT people, family people, retired people, and "folks".

Ignored, no advice, nothing...

In this case, perhaps the reason for "absolutely no advice" is that no one has anything helpful or new to offer.

You know what the printer is doing -- shall we dance?

What might be happening?

It's possible the ink is indeed drying out.

Why?

  • Temperature,
  • Humidity,
  • Switching of the printer to OFF when not in use -- When finally switched on, the printer must use a little more ink and work harder to get ready.  In general >> Leave the printer ON - When not in use, the printer will sleep in a low power mode.  If it needs to do so, a sleeping printer can usually wake to do self-maintenance.
  • Dirty printer (yes, we use this one a lot -- dirty printers just don't work as well as do clean printers.)
  • Old printer - This is my opinion and nothing more:  Old printers get to a point where they do not perform as well.  "Old" might be three to five years -- less expensive printers meant for lighter duty tend to last less time than to the more expensive, heavy-duty, Office style printers.  Heavy duty printers can go three to ten years, though the software will generally not be available for all that time.

What else?

  • Cartridge(s) might be empty -- small cartridges print far less content than do the XL cartridges.  Perhaps 20 pages of dense content might be all a small cartridge will print.  (No, I won't defend that comment.)
  • Printer might be dirty - the result might look the same as "dry" -- things don't print or don't print correctly.

Rotten experiences with printers are unfortunate - everyone hates tech that does not behave.

The reasons for bad tech behavior might be reasonable, unreasonable, mysterious, or known and irritating.
