Hi @BA2866,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing smudge marks down the side of the printed page on your MFP M477 series printer, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the issue. Here are some suggestions:

Check the Toner Cartridge:

  • Ensure that the toner cartridge is properly installed and seated securely in its place.
  • Verify if the toner cartridge is low or empty. If it is, replace it with a new one.

Inspect the Imaging Drum:

  • The imaging drum may be dirty or damaged. Remove the imaging drum and gently clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • If the drum is damaged, consider replacing it.

Check for Foreign Objects:

  • Inspect the printer for any loose paper, labels, or other debris that might be causing the smudging.
  • Carefully remove any foreign objects that you find.

Examine the Fuser Unit:

  • The fuser unit might be causing the smudging issue. Check for any signs of damage or wear.
  • If the fuser unit is replaceable, consider replacing it if it shows signs of wear.

Adjust Paper Settings:

  • Ensure that you are using the correct type and size of paper for your print job.
  • Verify that the paper settings in the printer driver match the actual paper loaded in the tray.

Clean the Printer Interior:

  • Dust and debris inside the printer can also cause print quality issues. Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust or particles.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the firmware may resolve printing issues. Click Here

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
