- Unplugged the power cord at back of printer for 60 seconds
- Removed and re-seated the ink cartridge
- Cleaned the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth
- Replaced the ink cartridge with a new genuine HP part.
- Replaced the entire print head
- Checked that the firmware is up to date.

January 9, 2024 update:
I restored the printer to the original network settings per instructions in Chapter 10, pg 142, of the User Guide, with no success. Could a tech support rep from HP please provide some guidance?
Thanks for your consideration.

Hi @Ouzel_Bishop,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you've already gone through several troubleshooting steps, which is a good start. Since the issue persists, here are some additional steps you can take.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord.
- Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Ensure that the magenta cartridge is securely and correctly installed.
- Make sure there are no obstructions or protective tapes left on the cartridge.
Inspect for Physical Damage:
- Check the magenta cartridge for any signs of physical damage.
- Examine the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and in the printer for any damage.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Disconnect any other cables connected to the printer.
- Wait for at least 10 minutes.
- Reconnect all cables and power on the printer.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Even if you've already checked, ensure that you have the latest firmware for your printer model. Sometimes, reinstalling the firmware can resolve communication issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for responding, Alden.
- I performed a hard reset per the steps you described, with no success.
-------------------------
- I attempted to update the firmware by downloading the executable file OJP8720_2105A.exe (release date Apr 5, 2021) from HP's support webpage at:
https://support.hp.com/ca-en/drivers/hp-officejet-pro-8720-all-in-one-printer-series/model/7902033.
- I received the following message after installing the executable. I presume this means that I have the latest firmware.
Please advise on next steps.
