Has anyone found a resolution to this Supply System Problem error? I started receiving this message today when replacing my Magenta ink cartridge. I am enrolled in the HP Instant Ink so I know the cartridges are genuine although the warranty end date on the cartridge is 2023/05. I have tried all of the HP documentation including a factory reset. It's like it's not even trying to read the cartridge it immediately comes up with Supply System Problem. Is my printer toast? I have the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. Never had ANY problems with it until today. Please help!!
Thanks,
LindaRocco

Hi @LindaRocco,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Supply System Problem" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 typically indicates an issue with the ink cartridge or the printer's ability to read it. Since you've already tried replacing the Magenta cartridge and the error persists, here are some steps to troubleshoot further.
Verify Cartridge Authenticity
- Ensure the cartridge is genuine HP Instant Ink and matches your printer's model requirements.
- Check if the cartridge's warranty has expired (as it mentions 2023/05). Even though HP Instant Ink cartridges typically work as long as they have ink, expired warranty dates could be flagged.
Inspect the Cartridge
- Remove the Magenta cartridge.
- Clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
- Let it dry completely before reinserting it into the printer.
Check the Cartridge Slot
- Look inside the printer where the cartridge is inserted for any debris or damage.
- Clean the cartridge slot contacts carefully with a lint-free cloth and ensure nothing is obstructing the connection.
Update the Printer Firmware
- Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with newer cartridges.
- You can update the firmware via the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Support website.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 2 minutes.
- Reconnect the printer, turn it on, and try again.
Test with Another Cartridge
- If possible, try inserting a different Magenta cartridge (either new or one from a different printer, if available).
- This can help determine whether the issue is with the cartridge or the printer itself.
Temporary Workaround
If you urgently need to print, try removing the Magenta cartridge entirely. Your printer may allow printing in grayscale or black and white until the issue is resolved.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you alden4 for your response. I tried everything you listed and I even reset it to factory settings but same message. It doesn't even appear to be trying to communicate with the cartridge. I had 2 magenta cartridges, neither of them worked. I thought about replacing the print head but that's kind of expensive if it doesn't fix the problem and I need my printer. I cannot wait for weeks to try and resolve this issue. I tried removing the magenta altogether but it still wouldn't print. What would you recommend as a replacement printer with same capabilities? Preferably one that doesn't have these issues? Thank you for being so thorough in your response. The printer is just under 8 years so I guess I got my money's worth? 🙂
Thanks again,
LindaRocco

Hi @LindaRocco,
Thank you for your response,
It sounds like you've already exhausted many troubleshooting options for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. Given its age (8 years), it's understandable to consider a replacement printer. Here are some recommendations and additional steps.
Printhead Cleaning and Inspection
If the issue persists, a clogged or damaged printhead could be the culprit. While replacing the printhead can be costly, you might consider manually cleaning it. If comfortable, follow these steps:
- Turn off the printer and remove the cartridges.
- Gently clean the printhead contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
- Reinstall everything and perform a printhead alignment.
Recommended Replacement Printers:
Here are reliable alternatives with similar capabilities to the OfficeJet Pro 8710. These printers are known for improved cartridge handling and features.
HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e
- Fast printing and scanning.
- Dual-band Wi-Fi and robust security features.
- Includes HP+ for a year of free ink (requires an account setup).
- Better cartridge recognition and reliability.
HP ENVY Inspire 7955e
- Excellent for both home and office use.
- Handles photos and documents with equal quality.
- Includes HP+ benefits for ink and extended warranty.
HP Smart Tank 7602
- Uses refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges.
- Ideal for high-volume printing without frequent ink purchases.
- Lower long-term running costs and fewer cartridge-related issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,
Thanks again for your reply. I actually had 2 print cartridges, neither of them worked and I am using the HP Instant Ink program so I know their genuine cartridges. I took out the magenta and left it out of the carriage but it still wouldn't let me print just black. I took out the print head and cleaned with distilled water, waited and put it back in but it would not let me align the printhead either, it just comes up with the Supply System problem.
Thank you for your recommendation on a comparable printer. I could not find the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e. Would you recommend the HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e?
Thanks again for all your help,
LindaRocco

Hi User3181,
You can try the following instructions:
- Ensure the printer is connected to a network with an active internet connection.
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to Setup or Device Manager (I think it is Setup)
- Select Update Firmware
- If an update is available, select OK to begin the update.
If you are part of the HP Instant Ink you can update the firmware by logging into their site and run it from there as well.
Hope this helps,
LindaRocco

I replaced the Magenta with a brand new HP Magenta and it failed again. I then purchased a new HP Magenta ($44.00) and it still failed. I cleaned the contacts - no change, still failed. My Cyan cartridge was half full and it is now showing empty but the error is still indicating the Magenta cartridge. I power cycled, no change. I am now out $44.00 following your suggestions and it looks like I have to purchase a new printer. This type of trouble shooting really sucks - part changing at my expense.
