OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series

Hi @amyhofacre,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series printer shows a "Supply System Problem" after inserting new cartridges, and particularly when the magenta cartridge reads zero ink while the others show low ink, several potential issues could be at play.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Compatibility and Installation

  • Ensure Proper Installation: Make sure the new cartridges are properly seated in their respective slots. Remove them and reinsert them, ensuring they click into place securely.
  • Verify Cartridge Compatibility: Confirm that the cartridges are compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series. Using non-compatible or counterfeit cartridges can cause detection issues.

2. Reset the Printer

  • Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes resolve sensor errors and reset the supply system.

3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Clean Contacts: Turn off the printer and remove the ink cartridges. Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water. Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.

4. Update Printer Firmware  Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check for Updates: Ensure that the printer's firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause issues with recognizing new cartridges. You can update the firmware through the printer’s control panel or by downloading the latest version from the HP website.

5. Run Printer Diagnostics

  • Printer Diagnostic Tool: Use HP’s built-in diagnostic tools or HP Print and Scan Doctor (available on the HP website) to run diagnostics and troubleshoot cartridge and supply system problems.

6. Reset the Ink System

  • Ink System Reset: Some HP printers allow for an ink system reset through the settings menu. Check your printer’s manual for instructions on performing an ink system reset.

7. Check for Obstructions

  • Inspect Cartridge Area: Ensure there are no obstructions or packing materials left in the cartridge area that might interfere with proper cartridge recognition.

8. Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • Genuine Cartridges: Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges. Third-party or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause recognition issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
