HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

Hello, my printer comes up with the "Supply System Problem" on the Blue and Yellow cartridges. I have two sets of genuine new HP cartridges and the problem does not reset when installing these new cartridges. Please help.

Hi @Runningcrays, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Supply System Problem" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer typically indicates an issue with the ink cartridge system, even when using genuine HP cartridges. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Perform a Basic Reset

  1. With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall and then into the printer.
  5. Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.

Remove and Reinsert Cartridges

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  2. Remove all cartridges, especially the Blue (Cyan) and Yellow ones.
  3. Inspect the cartridges for damage (leaks, broken chips, etc.).
  4. Gently clean the contacts (gold-colored chip area) using a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  5. Let them dry for a few minutes and then reinsert the cartridges firmly.
  6. Close the cartridge door and check if the printer recognizes them.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts & Printer Carriage

  1. Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Remove the affected cartridges.
  3. Locate the metal contacts inside the cartridge slot.
  4. Clean these contacts gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  5. Wait a few minutes for it to dry, then reinsert the cartridges.
  6. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Check for Firmware Updates

  1. On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
  2. If an update is available, install it.
  3. Restart the printer and check if the issue is resolved.

Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows Only)

  1. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to detect and resolve any supply-related issues.

Test with Another Set of HP Cartridges

Since you have two sets of new HP cartridges, try swapping them again:

  • Insert the other set of cartridges and check if the error changes.
  • If the error remains with both sets, the issue may be with the printer's ink supply system.

Check for Blocked Vents

  1. Look at the top of the cartridges.
  2. Ensure the vent is not blocked by tape or dried ink.
  3. If necessary, gently clean the vent with a pin to clear any blockages.

Hard Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
