If you are encountering supply problem error messages for the magenta ink cartridge in your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer, follow these troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the issue:
Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that you are using the correct cartridge model, which for your printer is HP 952 magenta ink cartridge.
Verify the Cartridge: Make sure the cartridge is genuine and not damaged. Fake or damaged cartridges often cause error messages.
Reinstall the Ink Cartridge: Sometimes removing and reinstalling the cartridge can fix the error. Follow these steps:
- Open the printer cover.
- Remove the magenta ink cartridge.
- Check that the cartridge and its contact area inside the printer are clean and free of any obstructions.
- Reinsert the magenta cartridge firmly into its slot.
Clean Cartridge Contacts: Clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge and inside the printer.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove the ink cartridge.
- Use a lint-free cloth moistened with distilled water to gently wipe the contacts on the cartridge.
- Use a clean and dry lint-free cloth to wipe the cartridge contacts again.
- Let the contacts dry completely before reinserting the cartridge.
Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes an outdated firmware version can cause cartridge recognition issues. Update your printer’s firmware:
- Visit HP Software and Drivers and search for your printer model.
- Download and install the latest firmware update available for your printer.
Reset the Printer: Conduct a printer reset to clear any existing errors.
- With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the outlet.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the outlet and then back into the printer.
- Turn on the printer.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

I have done this 3 times. I only use genuine HP cartridges and this far I have used 1 magenta cartridge purchased as a single cartridge to replace- no success and then a color pack of 3 cartridges. I continue to get this message. I spent a lot of money for the printer and the genuine HP cartridges.
What else can you suggest to fix this issue?? I’m thinking HP is no longer providing a quality product or helpful tech support without charging extra.
