Office jet pro 9020

I am 70 years old and about to have a heart attack.  I have spent at least 6 hours watching youtubes and reading blogs trying to fix this.  I have tried Hp cartridges and non Hp.  It only réfers to the color cartridges being deficiente in some way, but won’t print even when I say “black only”.  I need blood tests to visit my doctor!  I also want to delete the feature that only allows Hp cartridges.  I used to be able to use non Hp cartridges, but now some Hp upgrade must be preventing this.  This is an Hp s am.

Hi @Drjoanne.,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I’m very sorry to hear how stressful this has been for you, let’s take this step by step, in simple words, so you don’t have to worry any more than you already do. Please take your time.

First, know this about cartridges

Your HP printer works best with original HP ink.

If you use non-HP cartridges, the printer may show error messages, not print, or stop printing colors.

HP cannot guarantee that non-HP or refilled cartridges will work properly.

If you see a warning about a non-HP cartridge, press “OK”, “No” or “Continue” on the screen if you can. Sometimes this lets you keep printing in black only, but the message might pop up each time you print.

If the printer still won’t print, do a simple reset

This is just like giving your printer a quick “nap” so it can wake up fresh.

Here’s how:

Turn off your printer using the power button.
If your printer has a removable battery, take it out. (Most don’t, so skip if not sure.)
Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall.
Wait 60 seconds, this is important.
Plug the cord directly into a wall socket (don’t use an extension cable if possible) and back into the printer.
Turn the printer back on.

If it still says there’s a problem with the cartridge

It’s time to put in a new cartridge, especially the one it says is the problem (often the color cartridge).

If you have an HP Instant Ink subscription, check if you have a new cartridge at home. If not, you can contact HP Instant Ink support — they’ll send you one.

If you don’t have Instant Ink, you can buy a genuine HP cartridge from a store nearby or order one from the HP Store online.

How to change the cartridge:

Lift the lid or door to open the ink area.
Wait for the ink part to stop moving.
Take out the cartridge with the issue.
Put the new one in carefully until it clicks in place.
Close the lid.
If the printer asks, follow any instructions to line up (align) the ink.

One more tip

If you only want to print black, it often still needs the color cartridge to be working, so it’s best to replace any bad cartridges even if you’re not printing in color.

You are not alone. If you want, I can help step by step again. Please reply and tell me what part you’re at now.

I really hope this helps. Please take care of yourself first, and don’t worry, we’ll get this sorted together.
