How do I stop test pages after I've installed new cartridges?  It prints out 6 pages and uses almost a quarter of my new ink just to do so !!!

That is an alignment sheet you need to place it on the scanner glass and press the button to complete alignment. You have illustrated instructions on the printed sheet.
