The replacement cartridge now sold for the 901 cartridge is not recognized in my J4540 printer. These cartridges are extremely expensive they should at least work. How do I get the printer to recognize the new cartridge and print.

I see that you are facing an issue with the cartridges.
To understand the issue and help you, please share the details listed below:
- Exact model number/product number(SKU number) of your HP Product (Click here for information on how to find the model number/product number).
- Error messages or Blinking lights (if any) on the unit.
-May I Know do you have any cartridge problem errors? If yes, please share the error message cartridge errors
Note: Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.
In the meantime Here are a few steps you can try to get the printer to recognize the new cartridge:
Clean the Contacts: Make sure the metal contacts on the cartridge and the printer are clean. Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab with a small amount of distilled water to gently clean the contacts.
Reinstall the Cartridge: Take out the replacement cartridge and reinstall it. Ensure that it is securely placed in the cartridge slot.
Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Plug it back in and turn it on. Check if the printer recognizes the cartridge.
Update Printer Firmware: Visit the HP website and check for any available firmware updates for your printer. Updating the firmware might resolve compatibility issues. Click Here

I tried all of the suggested actions. The printer is a J 4540 model. The print cartridge is the new model 60 intenede to replace model 901.
As soon as you put the cartridge into the printer the warning notice states "Incompatible print cartridge(s) : Black"
As is always the case, if one print cartridge is not available, the printer will not function at all.
The numbers on the back of the unit are CN833130D4 and CB780A.
