I was using c309a very occasionally, and an error message came out that the cartridge was suddenly damaged or that it was not installed.

I opened the cover to replace it, but it didn't work, so I tried to move it manually according to the video procedure, but it almost didn't work.

It moved about 1 centimeter, but it was so hard that if I forced it, it would break, so I stopped.

There doesn't seem to be any paper jam

What should I do?

Do you have no choice but to throw it away?どなたか詳しい方助けてください

Hi @お客様,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel how upsetting this situation is. You open the cover expecting a simple cartridge swap, but instead, the carriage is stiff, barely moves, and your trusted Photosmart C309a suddenly says the cartridge is “damaged or not installed.”

You did the right thing by not forcing it; that machine has delicate metal rails and ribbon cables that can snap if pushed.

STEP 1: Reset the Printer Mechanism (Important)

This resets the carriage lock and service station.

  1. Turn the printer OFF
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back (not the wall, from the printer)
  3. Wait 60 seconds
  4. Reconnect the cord directly into the wall outlet, not an extension
  5. Turn printer ON

You should hear the carriage attempt to reset.

STEP 2: Check if the Carriage Moves After Reset

Open the cartridge access door.

The carriage should:

  • move to the center automatically
  • unlock itself

If it still stays stuck and only moves 1 cm, continue.

STEP 3: Lubricate the Carriage Rail (HP‑approved method for older Photosmart models)

This fixes 60–70% of “stuck carriage” C309a cases.

You need:

  • a cloth
  • 1–2 drops of light machine oil (sewing machine oil, not WD‑40)

Steps:

  1. Unplug the printer again.
  2. Look at the silver metal rail behind the carriage.
  3. Put a tiny drop of oil on a cloth.
  4. Gently wipe it along the metal bar.
  5. Move the carriage slowly and carefully left–right about 2–3 cm.

Do NOT force it.
If it starts loosening, you’re saved.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
