@odslimited, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Supply System Error on HP OfficeJet Pro 8720!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer is displaying a supply system error message after replacing the black ink cartridge, follow these steps for troubleshooting:
Ensure You Have Used Genuine HP Ink Cartridges:
- Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges compatible with your printer model.
Clean the Ink Cartridge and Printhead Contacts:
- Carefully clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge and the printhead using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Ensure they are free of ink deposits.
Reseat the Printhead and Ink Cartridges:
- Remove the ink cartridges and the printhead, then reseat them firmly back into their proper slots. Ensure each cartridge is inserted correctly and snapped into place.
Check the Printhead Alignment:
- The printer will automatically run a printhead alignment test once the cartridges and printhead are reseated. Make sure the alignment test completes successfully.
Printhead Cleaning:
- If cleaning the contacts did not resolve the issue, try performing a printhead cleaning using the printer’s control panel. This can help clear any blockages or ink build-up.
Check the Ink System:
- Ensure no part of the ink system (printhead, printhead cleaner, ink cartridges) is missing or improperly installed.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

@odslimited, Thanks for the update and for trying all those steps — I know how frustrating this can be. Let’s try a few more advanced things:
1. Access the Printer’s Engineering Menu:
You can try accessing the engineering menu by pressing Back > Back > Cancel > Back quickly on the printer’s touchscreen (it may take a few tries). Once inside, look for the "Clean the Printhead" or "Reset Supply System" options. Be cautious — avoid options you're unsure about.
2. Power Reset with Cartridges Removed:
Remove all cartridges.
Power off the printer, unplug it for 60 seconds.
Plug it back in, power on, and wait for a "missing cartridges" message.
Reinsert cartridges one by one.
Quick Questions:
Are you seeing the error immediately on startup, or only when trying to print?
Did you replace the cartridge with a new genuine HP one, or was it refilled/remanufactured?
Have there been any recent firmware updates?
Let me know, and we’ll go from there!
