Hi @SCM11,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the lack of backlight on the display of your HP Smart Tank 5100 All-in-One Printer can be frustrating, especially when trying to view icons and settings.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to address this issue:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the backlight on the display turns on.

Adjust Display Settings:

  • Some HP printers allow you to adjust the brightness of the display through settings. Try accessing the printer's control panel (even though it's difficult to see) and look for display settings. You may need to check your printer's user manual for specific instructions.

Update Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your printer is running the latest firmware. Connect your printer to the HP Smart app or HP software on your computer and check for any available firmware updates. Updating firmware might resolve display issues.

Check Power Supply:

  • Ensure that the printer is connected to a stable power source. Unstable power can sometimes cause display issues.

Factory Reset:

  • If the above steps do not work, you may want to try resetting the printer to factory settings. This may restore the display settings and backlight functionality. Refer to the printer manual for steps to perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
