Hello everyone,
A few years ago, I bought a HP 9010e. While installation, I deliberately did not activate HP+ ... to be able to use 3rd party ink cartridges. In the past, I had no issues by using third-party cartridges.
However, after installing these new cartridges, I receive the following error message:
"The specified printer cartridges have been blocked by the printer's firmware because they contain a non-HP chip. This printer is only intended for use with new or reused printer cartridges that contain a new or reused HP chip." (translated from german message text).
I have read in other threads that this issue might be related to the firmware. But why would that be the case if HP+ is not activated on my printer? It was never activated on my printer.
My printer's firmware version is MANHTNPP 1N005.2450B.00, automatically updated in December 2024. I have now disabled automatic firmware updates as of today.
I’d appreciate any advice or possible solutions! Thanks in advance!

There is a distinction between the requirements for HP+ service contract the the standard cartridge protection enforced on the printer.

Which Ink Can be Used in the Printer?

HP Printers - Dynamic Security Enabled Printers
Dragon Comments
The printer requires that all ink cartridges used in the printer include an HP chip embedded in the cartridge.
This limitation includes cartridges that are refilled (by you) and / or refilled and sold by any seller, or remanufactured .
This protection is called Dynamic Security.
There is no legal means of removing or bypassing the need for the HP chip in the ink cartridge.
HP does not sell, recommend, nor support any of used or refilled practices.
The use of of a used or refilled HP chipped cartridge might be tolerated by the printer.
Trouble with refilled / remanufactured ink? See the ink seller for information, help, or support.

Requirements for HP+ printers
This topic describes the requirements for HP+ printers.
Keep the printer connected to the Internet
HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The
Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates.
During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet using a supported network connection. After setup, you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must still be connected to the Internet.
Use Original HP cartridges
Original HP cartridges are cartridges manufactured and sold by HP in official HP packaging. If non-Original HP
supplies or refilled cartridges are installed, HP+ printers will not operate as expected.

Important
HP Instant Ink Print-by-Page subscription can be added to HP+ (but is not required).

An HP Instant Ink subscription is not required as part of the HP+ setup or HP+ service.

I have the identical problem -same printer, same firmware. I was using a set of non HP cartridges for the past 6 months. They worked fine until yesterday after the screen showed a "firmware update" was applied overnight. I found no solution to revert to the old firmware so now I am forced to buy the overpriced HP ink. I may as well buy a new printer (non-HP!) there should be a law against this!!!

Hello Bitsmasher, identical problem to you, yesterday. I ordered an Epson Eco Tank and will never, ever buy another HP product. Agree with you, I did not purchased knowing that non HP ink could not be used, I never knbew of that restriction and the printer worked fine for a long time. I would never have done. The only way to be heard is vote with your feet, do not ever buy an HP product again. I will not.
