My printer continues to say there is a supply problem and will not connect to the new toner I just put in. I only replaced the colored colors, the new black toner cartridge was already in there and working properly, however, now the printer says it cannot connect to any of the cartridges.
I already turned it on and off, un plugged it plugged it back in, and took the cartridges out and put them back in multiple times.
I have Mac OS 12.2.1
Thoughts?

Hi @GavAnd,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing getting the "supply problem" error with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw indicates that the printer isn't recognizing the toner cartridges properly. Since you've already tried turning it off, unplugging it, and reinstalling the cartridges, there are a few other steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Steps to troubleshoot the toner connection error:
Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Go to HP Support on your Mac or visit the HP software and driver page for your printer model.
- Download and install any available firmware updates for the printer. Sometimes, updates fix compatibility issues with cartridges.
Check Cartridge Compatibility:
- Ensure the toner cartridges you installed are genuine HP cartridges and compatible with the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.
- If you're using third-party or refilled cartridges, this might trigger the error. HP printers are sensitive to non-genuine supplies.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts:
- Power off the printer and unplug it.
- Carefully remove each toner cartridge and inspect the gold contacts on both the cartridge and the corresponding connection point inside the printer.
- Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts.
- Allow the contacts to dry before reinserting the cartridges.
Reset the Printer:
- Perform a factory reset:
- On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.
- This will reset the printer to its default settings. You will need to reconfigure your network and other settings after the reset.
Manually Configure Supplies Setting:
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > System Setup > Supply Settings.
- Check if the setting is on Notify When Low or something similar, and toggle the setting to see if it helps recognize the new cartridges.
Disable Cartridge Protection (if enabled):
- Sometimes HP's cartridge protection feature can block third-party cartridges or even create conflicts with genuine ones.
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > System Setup > Supply Settings > Cartridge Policy and turn off Cartridge Protection.
Mac OS and Driver Reinstallation:
- If none of the above works, try reinstalling the printer drivers:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Delete the existing printer from the list.
- Re-add the printer using the latest drivers available from HP’s website.
- Make sure your Mac OS version is compatible with the drivers.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
