My LaserJet Pro M118dw is telling me the toner cartridge is "very low." It's supposed to output about 1,200 pages, but I've only printed 360. I do not print high-density pages —  mostly average density text, minimal graphics. I would expect to hit at least 1,000 pages based on this usage.

What's going on here? Based on seeing a few other posts about this it seems to be a common problem. Is it a faulty sensor? A bad/underfilled cartridge? Would appreciate some guidance and a resolution on it. I'm assuming HP is not deliberately underfilling cartridges, because that would be unethical, right?

Hi @brian190,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that you are facing issues with your toner cartridge. I'd like to help!

Please follow the steps below.

Change supply settings in Windows

For computers with Windows, change when the Toner Low message displays using HP Printer Assistant.

Turn on the printer.

Search Windows for laserjet, and then click the printer name in the list of results.

HP Printer Assistant opens.

Click Print, and then click HP Device Toolbox.

Click the System tab, and then click Supply Settings.

In the box next to Low Threshold (Black Cartridge), type the percentage of toner that you want remaining in the toner cartridge when the Toner Low message displays again.

NOTE:

HP recommends that you set the toner percentage to at least 8%. A lower percentage can reduce print quality.

Try to print the job again.

Change supply settings in Mac

For Mac computers with macOS or OS X, change when the Toner Low message displays using HP Utility.

Turn on the printer.

Search the Mac for HP, click Hewlett-Packard or HP in the results, and then double-click HP Utility.

HP Utility opens.

Click Supplies Management .

In the box next to Black Cartridge, type the percentage of toner that you want remaining in the toner cartridge when the Toner Low message displays again.

NOTE:

HP recommends that you set the toner percentage to at least 8%. A lower percentage can reduce print quality.

Try to print the job again.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi, sorry it took so long to get to this, but I've checked this & the percentage is currently set at 6. This tells me that the cartridge actually is low and does need to be replaced.

What can we do to resolve this? I'm pretty frustrated that I paid for a full cartridge & only got about 30% of one.

Would appreciate getting this sorted out. Who can I talk to about this?
