Just bought a used M527F which has an installed 87X cartridge. I looked at getting a second one to keep on hand and see many of eBay with a white box labeled CF287XC which are considerably less expensive than the more typical black box 87A CF287X . One seller said this is the same but a "corporate" option. Seems fishy to me since who buys an enterprise printer besides a business. Has anyone used these white boxed cartridges or know about them? The forum wouldn't let me post an image of the box but it can be readily found by searching CF287XC on eBay.

The white box XC cartridges are marketed for managed printers and are sales restricted to authorized partners. Likely this is an old stock unused product returned by a customer or a partner selling products outside of their agreements with HP. I am not sure a non-managed product will accept the cartridge, if you buy it make sure the seller guarantees it will work and will take it back if it does not.

Thank you. Not sure how a “non-managed” printer would refuse the cartridge. Given the significant cost difference surely someone must have tried this option. Rather than try to save money by using non-OEM toners, I typically buy my HP cartridges on eBay as likely left over stock after someone got rid of a printer so it wouldn’t bother me to buy an XC cartridge that way if it were the same and just packaged differently.

The memory chips are different and they simply program the DC controller to reject cartridges, it has been done for years.
