I understand your HP Smart Tank 585 printer is showing an E3 error, indicating a tri-color printhead issue. Let’s go through steps to troubleshoot and resolve this.

 

1. Power Cycle the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait 60 seconds and plug it back in.

Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.

 

2. Check Cartridge Installation

Open the cartridge access area.

Make sure the tri-color cartridge is properly seated in its slot.

Remove and reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

 

3. Clean Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

Remove the tri-color cartridge.

Using a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water, clean the copper/gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.

Avoid touching the nozzles directly.

Reinstall the cartridge and close the access door.

 

4. Check for Protective Tape

Verify that all protective tape or covers on the tri-color cartridge have been removed.

Even a small piece of tape can cause an E3 error.

 

5. Align or Clean Printhead via HP Smart App

Open the HP Smart app on your computer or phone.

Go to Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.

Follow the on-screen instructions to align and clean the printhead.

 

6. Replace Cartridge if Needed

If the E3 error continues after cleaning and reinstalling, the tri-color cartridge may be faulty.

Install a genuine HP tri-color cartridge compatible with the Smart Tank 585.
