I have a printer that was once registered with HP and given cartridges with it.  The problem is the printer is telling me that it needs to be registered in order to use the ink.  What do I do?

Hi @DRTYukon,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you would like to re-register a printer with HP Instant Ink, and you're encountering a message prompting a registration requirement, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Remove Old Registration

  • If the printer was previously linked to another HP account, it must be removed before you can re‑register.
  • Log in to the old HP account  → go to Instant Ink → My Account → Remove Printer.

Factory Reset the Printer

  • On the printer’s control panel: Menu → Settings → Printer Maintenance → Restore → Restore Factory Defaults.
  • This clears old account information stored on the printer.

Reconnect Printer to Wi‑Fi

  • Use the Wireless Setup Wizard or the HP Smart app to connect the printer to your current Wi‑Fi.
  • Make sure the wireless light turns solid.

Add Printer in HP Smart

  • Install HP Smart on your computer or mobile device.
  • Sign in with your HP account.
  • Tap Add Printer → Set Up a New Printer.
  • Follow prompts to connect the printer.

Re‑Enroll in Instant Ink

  • In HP Smart, go to Instant Ink → Enroll Printer.
  • Enter your payment details and shipping address.
  • Once enrolled, the printer will authenticate the Instant Ink cartridges again.

Take care and have an amazing day!
