The following worked on my Envy Photo 7855, I suspect the procedure will be the same or similar on your Envy 5530:
- On the front panel touch the wireless icon at the top of the screen. This will give the IP address of your printer, perhaps something like 192.168.1.10. Write down the IP address for your printer.
- Go to your computer and open a browser. Enter the IP address you found above in the browser window. This will open the Embedded Web Server (EWS) for the printer.
- From the printer's EWS click Tools, Product Information, Supply Settings, then set Cartridge Protection to Off, Apply. This will cause the printer to not set future cartridges installed in the printer as Protected.
Please note that turning off Cartridge Protection will only affect future cartridges installed in the printer. Any cartridges that have been previously installed will already be marked as protected. Also, turning off cartridge protection only affects whether cartridges are marked as protected. It will not affect the check for protection. If a cartridge has been marked as protected in a different printer it will not be allowed in a different printer, regardless of the cartridge protection settings in the new printer. Once a cartridge has been marked for protection it cannot be reset and will not be usable outside the printer (or in some cases a printer in the fleet) that marked it as protected.

Bob_Headrick, thank you ever so much for your response. I spent so much time on this problem, and to see the detailed response that you provided was so helpful. I returned the cartridge, but when I'm ready for the next cartridge I'll try this again with your instructions. I appreciate that you are there to assist users, especially at times like this when some people may be on a budget and wish to purchase the least expensive product that will work. Thank you again.

The instructions I gave are for turning off the cartridge protection in your printer. This only changes the behavior of the printer in setting the cartridge protection. If the cartridges you are trying to use have been marked as protected in another printer then they will not work in your printer, regardless of the setting for cartridge protection.
The printers that support cartridge protection will always check for protected cartridges. The only difference with turning cartridge protection on or off is whether the printer will set an unprotected cartridge to protected.
If you are buying refilled cartridges the seller should check the cartridge protection, since cartridges with this set will not be usable in printers other than the one that set cartridge protection. Make sure your supplier has a good warranty and will accept such cartridges for return.
