Hi @steve_43,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the cartridge error with your HP OfficeJet 4500.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Make sure both cartridges are installed correctly. Remove them and then reinsert them, ensuring they click into place securely.

Inspect Cartridges:

  • Verify that the protective tape has been removed from the cartridges. Sometimes the tape covering the ink nozzles or contacts is left on, which can prevent proper installation.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Gently clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridges and the printer with a soft, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the nozzles or use any liquids.

Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Confirm that the cartridges you installed are compatible with your HP OfficeJet 4500 model. HP 901 Black and HP 60 Tri-color cartridges should be compatible, but double-check to be sure.

Reset Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Sometimes a firmware update can resolve compatibility issues. Check for any available updates on HP's website or through the printer’s settings menu.

Try Different Cartridges:

  • If possible, try using different cartridges to determine if the issue is with the new cartridges or the printer itself.

If you’ve tried all these steps and still see the error, the cartridges might be defective, or there could be an issue with the printer’s cartridge sensors.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
