Hi @Elaine246

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation—it’s incredibly frustrating when something as routine as replacing a cartridge turns into a struggle.

Let’s gently walk through a few precise steps to help release that stuck cartridge without causing damage.

Step-by-step to safely remove a stuck ink cartridge

1. Power cycle the printer

  • Turn on the printer if it’s not already on.
  • Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer while it’s still on—this freezes the carriage in place.
  • This allows you to work without the carriage moving unexpectedly.

2. Check for visible obstructions

  • Use a flashlight to inspect around the stuck cartridge.
  • Look for any paper scraps, dried ink, or plastic tabs that might be jamming it.
  • If you see dried ink or debris, gently clean around the cartridge with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.

3. Apply gentle pressure to release

  • Hold the cartridge firmly at the sides (not the top or bottom).
  • Press down slightly and then pull outward in a smooth, straight motion.
  • Avoid twisting or forcing it—if it doesn’t budge, try gently rocking it side to side while pulling.

4. Check the latch or locking mechanism

  • Some models have a spring-loaded latch or clip that must be pressed or lifted before the cartridge can be removed.
  • If your printer has this, press the latch inward or upward while pulling the cartridge out.

5. If still stuck, try warming the area slightly

  • Use a warm (not hot) damp cloth and gently press it against the cartridge area for 30 seconds.
  • This can soften dried ink or loosen tight plastic tolerances.

After removal

  • Before inserting a new cartridge, clean the cartridge slot gently with a dry lint-free cloth.
  • Make sure the new cartridge clicks into place without resistance.
