HP Officejet Pro 8025. Bought 2nd hand with InstantInk cartridges. Bought HP 910 cartridge and just want to print black and white but it’s saying I have a cartridge error that cartridges are not installed since I took out the color which I don’t need. If I install the color InstantInk cartridges it says it cannot be used u til I enroll in the InstantInk program which I do not want to. Do I have to purchase color cartridges just to make the thing work? I already cha get the settings to greyscale and black and white to no avail. Thanks!

Using the 8025 printer with just the black 910 cartridge offers efficient monochrome printing capabilities. cox phone services While color printing may not be available without additional cartridges, the black ink cartridge ensures crisp text and graphics for documents and presentations. Ensure sufficient black ink levels for uninterrupted printing and consider supplementing with color cartridges when needed for versatile printing options.

Hi @Rob_P2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

For the HP Officejet Pro 8025, using it with only the black ink cartridge (HP 910 in your case) and not installing the color cartridges typically leads to issues, as you've encountered. Here's why this happens and what you can do:

Cartridge Requirements: The HP Officejet Pro 8025, like many other HP printers, requires all cartridges (black and color) to be installed in order to function correctly, even if you are only planning to print in black and white. This is because the printer performs periodic maintenance cycles where it uses a small amount of ink from all cartridges to prevent the print nozzles from clogging.

Cartridge Compatibility and Instant Ink: Since the color cartridges you have are tied to the HP Instant Ink program, they require an active subscription to function. If these cartridges are installed without an active subscription, they will trigger an error preventing usage.

Solution Options:

  • Install Standard Color Cartridges: To use your printer without enrolling in the Instant Ink program, you would need to purchase standard, non-Instant Ink HP 910 color cartridges. This allows the printer to function normally and avoid the subscription requirement.
  • Use Only Black Ink Setting: Although you’ve set the printer to grayscale and black-and-white, it will still check for the presence and functionality of all cartridges. However, purchasing standard color cartridges and setting the printer to use only black ink can help in minimizing the use of color ink.
  • Check Firmware Settings: In some cases, updating the printer's firmware can resolve some cartridge recognition issues. You can check for updates via the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
