Hello, I need help with my HP OfficeJet Pro 8122e printer. At first, I was able to print, but after a month, below message always appears,
» Use SETUP Cartridge »
The printer still has its original SETUP cartridges, so I do not know what the issue is. I tried to restore it to default settings, but it still shows the same error.

Hi @Jing11,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Use SETUP Cartridge" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8122e printer usually indicates an issue with the cartridges. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Ensure the setup cartridges are installed correctly. Remove them and reinsert them, making sure they click into place securely.
Inspect Cartridges:
- Check for any protective tape or plastic that may not have been removed from the cartridges. This can sometimes block proper contact.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Use a lint-free cloth to gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer where the cartridges connect. Make sure they are free of dust and ink residue.
Check Expiration Date:
- Setup cartridges can have a limited lifespan. If they have expired or if the ink has dried out, they may need to be replaced.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for at least 60 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on.
Firmware Update:
- Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer. You can do this via the HP Smart app or the HP website.
Try New Cartridges:
- If the problem persists, consider trying a new set of cartridges, as the original setup cartridges may no longer be functional.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
