Hi @koltont40

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I hear your frustration—it’s unsettling when a printer you’ve been using for a long time suddenly asks for setup cartridges.

Thank you for reaching out and explaining the situation clearly. Before we dive into the steps to override this error, I’d like to gather a few details so we can tailor the guidance precisely to your printer model and setup:

  • Could you share the exact printer model name or series (for example, DeskJet, OfficeJet, Envy, Smart Tank, etc.)?
  • Do you recall if the printer originally came with setup cartridges when you first installed it?
  • Are you currently using standard replacement cartridges or refilled ones?
  • Did this message appear after a recent update, reset, or cartridge change?
  • Is the printer connected via Wi‑Fi, USB, or both?
  • Do you see any other messages on the printer’s display besides the request for setup cartridges?

Once I know these details, I can guide you through the specific steps to bypass the setup cartridge requirement and get your printer working again.

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Regards,

Hawks_Eye
