Inherited this printer and along with it came instant ink. I don't plan to use instant ink. I took them all out and bought a black ink cartridge at the store to test it out because I kept getting an ink error. Now it is saying that cartridges are missing and it won't print, even after selecting all black printing.
My question is....can I use the ink from the store or am I going to have to enroll in the instant ink??

The Officejet Pro 6978 requires all cartridges to be present, you will need to install color all the color cartridges even for printing in black only. I would suggest reinstalling the Instant Ink color cartridges until you get proper replacement cartridges to prevent the printhead from drying out.
Your printer will accept retail cartridges, you will not need to enroll for Instant Ink once you replace the Instant Ink cartridges with the proper retail cartridges.

I think the existing cartridges will work if the printer is subscribed. If not, when the new Instant Ink cartridges arrive they will include a return envelope for recycling.
