I have the HP Office Jet Pro 6970 All-in One series. I put in the same HP cartridges I've always used but the printer is telling me it's an older generation and cannot be used. How do I override this message. I refuse to throw out new cartridges because something changed in the printer.

Are the cartridges genuine HP or third-party? HP made some changes to the cartridges for your printer and later implemented firmware that would reject the old cartridges, see the document here for information. If your cartridges are genuine HP I would suggest you contact HP for a replacement as described in the document above.
I am not an employee of HP, I am a volunteer posting here on my own time.
