In this case, any assumption that you must have a subscription is not true.
If you are seeing a message or error that says otherwise, there is something else going on.
Instant Ink Print-by-Page subscription is optional.
Said another way,
You need not subscribe to Instant Ink to use your printer.

The only exception to "optional" is if you have signed up for HP All-In Plan
This "all inclusive" service plan includes a printer, support, and Ink as part of the contract.
You'd know if you signed up for HP All-In Plan
It's a contract and you must sign up.
