When copying, scanning or faxing, a blue vertical line appears on the document.  Can anyone advise me how to correct this problem?

There can be a couple of causes, you need to narrow down the issue.  Are you using the ADF or the flat glass for scanning? Do you get the same defect with both? If not then there is a good possibility that there is something on the slit glass that is used when scanning from ADF. You need to examine the whole width of the glass strip on the left side of the scan bed. Even the tiniest spec can cause a defect. Be careful cleaning and do not remove the mylar cover from the glass. If you damage the mylar you will have to come up with a creative replacement as it is not a part HP offers.

If the defect occur from both the ADF and the flat glass you may have a failed scanner, but I would perform a factory reset from the control pane first to eliminate the possibility of a corrupted system. Also ensure that you have the most current firmware installed.
