HP LaserJet Pro M118dw

Hi, I got a paper jam earlier today and now it won't print correctly. The first few pages were covered in toner, but after that it left a void and streaks down the left side on every page. I tried some tips online, I ended up needing to clean the image drum with a tissue and running a cleaning page however the issues continued and I found I needed to re-clean the drum because it got dirty again.

I'm really not sure if I just need to clean a different area of the printer too or replace something. The toner should only be half way used and it's the original one that came with the printer. The marks seem to be identical on each page.

If anyone can recommend a next step I could appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi @webpixie,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

For fixing poor printing quality, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Use genuine HP toner cartridges

HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue. To check the authenticity of your cartridges, go to the HP anti-counterfeit webpage (in English).

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

Print another page. If using genuine HP toner cartridges did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Check the paper

The quality and type of paper can affect the print job. Follow these guidelines to make sure the paper is appropriate. If it is not, load an appropriate paper type.

NOTE:

To purchase paper in the United States and Canada, go to the HP Store.

Use paper designed for HP LaserJet printers. Do not use paper designed only for inkjet printers.

Do not use paper that is too rough. Smoother paper might result in better print quality.

After loading appropriate paper in the tray, print another page. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Check the EconoMode setting

EconoMode is a print setting that uses less toner. However, using EconoMode can reduce print quality.

If the entire page is too dark or too light, the EconoMode setting might be enabled. HP does not recommend the full-time use of EconoMode. If EconoMode is used full time, the toner supply might outlast the mechanical parts in the toner cartridge.

Change the EconoMode setting depending on the darkness of print.

From the software program, select the Print option.

Select the printer, and then click the Properties or Preferences button.

Click the Paper/Quality tab, and locate the Print Quality area.

Enable or disable the EconoMode setting:

If the entire page is too dark, select the 600 dpi option, and then select the EconoMode check box to enable it.

If the entire page is too light, select the FastRes 1200 option, and then remove the EconoMode selection to disable it.

Click the OK button to close the Document Properties dialog box.

In the Print dialog box, click the OK button to print the job.

Print another page. If turning off the EconoMode setting did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
