HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

Vertical lines on printing when using the auto feed.  Other types of printing are fine.  I've tried turning printer off for a few but that doesn't help.  Any suggestions???   This printer is not even 2 years old yet and only used at home for personal printing--surely it should last longer than 2 years?????

Hi @Roxy4809,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer is producing vertical lines on documents printed using the automatic document feeder (ADF) but prints fine in other modes, it usually indicates an issue with the ADF scanning area or rollers. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Clean the ADF Rollers and Separator Pad:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the ADF cover and find the rollers and the separator pad. These can usually be found where the paper is fed into the ADF.
  • Use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to wipe the rollers and the separator pad. Avoid using too much liquid.
  • Let the rollers and separator pad dry completely before plugging the printer back in and turning it on.

Clean the ADF Scanning Area:

  • Sometimes, smudges on the scanning glass where the ADF feeds the paper to be scanned or copied can cause vertical lines.
  • Locate the ADF scanning area, which is separate from the main glass scanning surface. It's typically a thin strip of glass beside the main scanning glass.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with glass cleaner to gently wipe the glass. Again, be careful not to use too much liquid.

Check for Bits of Paper or Obstructions:

  • Look for any bits of paper or other obstructions in the ADF path that might be causing the paper to feed incorrectly, leading to vertical lines.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Sometimes, issues can be resolved with a firmware update. Check the HP website for any available updates for your printer model. Click here

Adjust Printer Settings:

  • Ensure the printer settings are correctly configured for the type of document you're scanning or copying using the ADF. Misconfiguration can sometimes lead to quality issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
