Also, I only want to print in black.  Will the printer work if I leave the color Instant Ink printer cartridges in place and only replace the black cartridge with a non instant ink one?

Hi @timjoe,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Ink Cartridges Compatibility:

  • HP printers are designed to work with specific cartridges. Mixing Instant Ink and non-Instant Ink cartridges might lead to compatibility issues. Ensure the black cartridge is compatible with the OfficeJet 8015e model.

Print in Black Mode:

  • You can set your printer to print in grayscale or black only mode through the printer settings in your computer.
  • On Windows 11, go to "Devices and Printers" and select your printer. In the printing preferences, set the mode to grayscale or black ink only.

Color Cartridge Considerations:

  • Even if you're printing only in black, some HP printers require all ink cartridges (including color) to be installed and not depleted for the printer to function properly.
  • Leaving the color cartridges in place should be fine, but ensure they have not dried up or become empty, as this could cause print errors.

Subscription Service:

  • If your printer is enrolled in the Instant Ink program, it might flag if any cartridge is not part of the subscription plan. Ensure your printer settings are adjusted to accept non-Instant Ink cartridges if you have opted out of the program.

Firmware and Printer Settings:

  • Check for any firmware updates or printer settings adjustments that might affect ink cartridge usage. An update might be necessary to ensure smooth usage with non-Instant Ink cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the response.  But I am also looking for what specific black HP ink cartridges that are not for instant ink service will work with my printer.  Can you give me a list of black HP ink cartridges that will work when not subscribed to the subscription service (e.g HP111XL or what?)?  Thanks in advance.  Tim

Hi @timjoe,

Thank you for your follow-up, great question! I’d be happy to clarify which standard, non-Instant Ink cartridges are compatible with your printer when you're not subscribed to the Instant Ink service.

For the HP OfficeJet 8015e, the compatible non-Instant Ink cartridges are:

Standard Yield (Black):

HP 910 Black Ink Cartridge

High-Yield (Black):

HP 910XL Black Ink Cartridge (Recommended for more pages and cost-efficiency)

These cartridges are non-Instant Ink versions, so they will work independently of the subscription service. Just make sure the box does not say "Instant Ink Ready" or "Instant Ink only" you want the regular retail version.

A few additional tips:

Even if you only plan to print in black, the printer may still require all cartridges (black + color) to be installed and to have some ink in them.

You can still set the printer to print in black only (grayscale) through your computer’s print settings.

Thanks. I appreciate the comment to look out for the instant ink subscription note on the ink package.  Blessings Tim
