@StvBuck, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Ensure the Printer Is Powered On
The carriage will not move unless the printer is turned on.
Make sure the power cord is securely connected and the printer is plugged into a working outlet.
Press the Power button to turn it on, if it’s not already.
Open the Ink Access Door Properly
Lift the top cover (scanner lid) to access the printhead area.
If the cover is not opened all the way, the printer might not trigger the carriage to move to the replacement position.
Wait about 10–20 seconds after opening the cover—the carriage should automatically move to the center.
Do NOT Force the Carriage by Hand
If it’s stuck, forcing it could damage the mechanism.
If the carriage feels locked in place, unplug the printer and gently try to move it after a minute—but only if no mechanical lock is present.
Unplug and Reset
Try a basic reset:
Turn off the printer.
Unplug it from the wall and wait 60 seconds.
Plug it back in and turn it on.
Open the lid and check if the carriage moves.
Run HP Smart:
- Download and run the HP Smart. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
- Refer: Use Diagnose & Fix in HP Smart to repair common printing issues (Windows, macOS) | HP® Support
Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

I appreciate the update!
Sounds like you went through quite the troubleshooting journey before ultimately getting a replacement.
While it's frustrating that the issue couldn't be fixed, at least you have a fresh start with a new printer.
Hopefully, this one runs smoothly! Let me know if you ever need help setting it up or optimizing its performance.
