Why cant I use black ink when it says I'm only out of the other colors

"Why" questions can be easy to answer or difficult to answer.

This printer and this answer:

Printer is built / manufactured to require all cartridges have ink and all cartridges are functional.

Black ink only / Print with only black ink / print with one cartridge / single cartridge

The printers listed in this document cannot print when one ink cartridge is empty.

Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. Some ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature.

I do understand the confusion - some printers can run on "black only" and others cannot do so.
