I own a
HP ENVY 4500 e‑All‑in‑One Printer
which is registered fir the instant ink program - I am not a heavy user of print but like to have it on standby!
previously I have had issues with buying cartridges from the likes of Amazon and although I bought HP cartridges I always got the message that the black cartridge was not compatible! I decided the best answer was to sign up for this service and then I was guaranteed originalnHP cartridges. Imagine the horror when I received the same message when inputting the HP cartridge received direct from HP. Has anyone else had this problem and what is the answer

Hi @Susiesincs,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
We understand how frustrating it must be to receive an “Incompatible Cartridge” error on your HP ENVY 4500 e‑All‑in‑One Printer, especially when you're enrolled in HP Instant Ink and using cartridges shipped directly from HP. You're right to expect seamless compatibility, and we’re here to help resolve this.
Steps to Fix Instant Ink Cartridge Errors
1. Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn the printer on.
This refreshes the printer’s internal memory and can clear temporary cartridge recognition issues.
2. Check Cartridge Seating
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove the black cartridge and inspect it for any protective tape or debris.
- Reinsert it firmly into its slot until it clicks.
- Repeat for the color cartridge if needed.
Make sure the cartridges are genuine HP Instant Ink cartridges and not standard retail cartridges.
3. Ensure Internet Connection
Your printer must be connected to the internet to validate Instant Ink cartridges.
- Check the wireless icon on the printer.
- If it’s not connected, reconnect via the HP app or printer settings.
4. Update Printer Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues.
- Visit the HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Printer series | HP® Support.
- Download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.
5. Check Instant Ink Enrollment Status
- Go to HP Instant Ink – Ink Monthly Subscription | HP Official Site.
- Sign in and verify your printer is still enrolled and active.
- Ensure your payment method is valid and your account is in good standing.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
