I have the original cartridges included with my new printer. There is plenty of ink, but my HP instant ink account email says I should replace them with the ones they sent me. Why should the ink in the existing cartridges be wasted and why is HP asking me to do this?

Welcome to the HP English Community --

The ink cartridges that come with a new printer typically have less ink than purchased cartridges --

The cartridges included in the box with the printer are meant as "setup and go" cartridges.

Purchased cartridges might come in at least two sizes:  Regular and XL

Instant Ink cartridges might be larger than purchased cartridges (and are still meant to fit in the printer)

Were it mine to do:

Perhaps continue to use the installed cartridges.

You may instead plan to switch out the installed cartridges and install the provided Instant Ink cartridges.

Instant Ink cartridges, those made part of the Instant Ink service AND those cartridges sent to you, remain the property of HP.   Return service of Instant Ink cartridges to HP is Free.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I am no stranger to Instant Ink as I had it before with my previous (old) printer. I am aware of the recycling service.

It just seemed wasteful to recycle the original cartridges when they have plenty of ink still. But if HP want me to do that, who am I to argue? 😊

You are welcome.

Should I live long enough to see it, I am looking forward to when most printers do not use ink to print.

Seems like someone should be working on the idea.  Smiling.

Cheers.
